On October 29, 2026, Google announced that the Gemini app can now create files, preview them and edit them inside the conversation. Until now the assistant answered with text that had to be copied somewhere else and tidied up there. Now the file opens in the chat and can be corrected without leaving it.
According to the announcement, the feature is available to all users, in every language where the Gemini app is available. Google did not name a paid plan as a requirement. Google's page for Canvas, the workspace where Gemini builds documents, says it is open to all users and that subscribers on the paid plans get a more advanced model inside it.
Which files open in the chat
Google lists documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, text files and code. Once the assistant has created a file, you can expand it to full screen and type corrections straight into it, as in any editor. You can also highlight a passage to ask a question about it, or ask the assistant to change only the highlighted part, whether text or an image.
Google's example: upload a photo of handwritten lecture notes, ask for a PDF study guide, then edit it by hand. The announcement does not say how to download or share the finished file, and it mentions no limit on the number of files.
Phones get PDFs only
The split between devices matters to anyone who works from a phone. Previewing and editing PDFs works on the web and in the mobile app. Every other type, meaning Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, text files and code, is supported on the web only. Someone who wants to fix a price sheet on their phone in the middle of a working day will have to wait until they reach a computer.
Quotes from handwritten notes
For a one-person business this shortens work that repeats every week. A renovation contractor can photograph the notes taken at a client's home and ask for a tidy draft quote, then fix a price or a line item in the same file. A designer can build a short deck for a new client from the project brief, and a fitness trainer can turn a list of packages into a price sheet. In each case a job that used to take two steps, getting the text and then laying it out in another program, happens in one place.
Check every number before the file goes to a customer. A price, a quantity or a date the assistant read off a photo of handwriting is exactly where a mistake slips through, and the quote goes out under the business's name.
A polished PDF is still not an invoice
A well designed PDF with a logo and figures is still not an accounting document. A quote can be prepared in any tool, and the guide to writing a quote covers what it should include. A tax invoice or a receipt is different: it has to come from a system that numbers it in sequence, keeps it, and requests an allocation number from the Israel Tax Authority when the transaction calls for one. A document built in a chat does none of that, even when it looks identical.
One more point before uploading files. A photo of notes taken at a client's place often includes a name, an address and a phone number. Anyone uploading material like that to an AI assistant should know what their account keeps and who can see it, and should remove details that are not needed before the upload.
