An Israeli business cannot advertise inside ChatGPT, competitors abroad already do
On 31 August 2026 OpenAI said its advertising business inside ChatGPT had reached an annualised revenue run rate of one billion dollars. Ads first went live as a test in the United States in February 2026, so that figure was built in roughly 200 days. The same announcement opened self-service buying to advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, bringing the service to 47 countries. Israel is not one of them.
Tens of thousands of advertisers are already buying space there. OpenAI says small and medium businesses make up a significant share of that activity, and that detail matters more than the billion. Advertising in the chat has stopped being an experiment run by large brands and become a channel a one-person business buys with a credit card, the way it already does on Google and Meta.
Who sees ads and who does not
Ads appear for free accounts and for Go subscribers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers do not see them. Temporary chats show no ads, and neither do accounts the system identifies as belonging to minors. The free tier is the large majority of the one billion weekly users, so most people talking to ChatGPT today sit on the side that sees advertising.
The ad sits below the answer, is labelled as sponsored, and is visually separated from it. OpenAI says ads run on systems separate from the model and do not influence the answer itself, and that they are not shown next to sensitive subjects such as physical health, mental health and politics. The advertiser gets aggregate numbers only, impressions and clicks. Chat content, name, email address, location and IP address do not reach them.
What this means for an Israeli business
A business registered in Israel cannot open a ChatGPT advertiser account today. This is not about budget or size, it is a country list Israel has not joined yet. Anyone waiting for this channel should assume it will not be available to them this quarter, and should not build a marketing plan around it.
The other side of the same coin applies to anyone selling abroad. Audiences in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Australia and much of Europe are already seeing sponsored placements inside answers. If your customers sit there, a local competitor may already be buying the slot below the answer they get to the question you answer. You have no way to respond in that channel, which leaves the organic side: being the source the model cites when it builds the answer.
The organic side, which is still open
With no space to buy, what is left is what was there before. A model assembling an answer to a business question pulls it from text that exists on the web, so a page that states plainly what the business does, for whom, in which area and at what price works better than a general marketing page. The same holds for the pricing page, for answers to common questions and for the service description. Concrete numbers, city names and engagement terms are what can be quoted. Slogans are not.
What happens on the user side
Plenty of Israeli self-employed people work with ChatGPT on a free account. For them this announcement means the tool they ask about suppliers, bookkeeping software and business services now also shows them space that was paid for. The sponsored block is not a recommendation from the model, even when it reads like a natural continuation of the answer. The separation is labelled, and it is worth reading that label before turning an answer into a purchase decision.
Anyone who wants an ad-free working environment can move to one of the paid tiers that carries no advertising, or open a temporary chat for questions where the distraction gets in the way. A temporary chat is not saved to history, which suits questions touching a specific client or financial figures anyway.
OpenAI said it intends to bring ads to more markets and add formats, campaign objectives, buying options and measurement tools. When Israel joins the list was not stated.
