WhatsApp Is Blocking Business Accounts in Israel: What Happens When the Customer Channel Closes Without Warning

On 6 September 2026 a request to certify a class action against WhatsApp was filed in the Lod District Court. The claim is that the company repeatedly blocks the accounts of Israeli users and businesses with no advance notice, no description of the violation being alleged, no chance to correct it and no real route of appeal to a human being. The request was filed by attorneys Guy Ofir and Victoria Reznik on behalf of the travel company Tick Travel. The sum is estimated at more than 2.5 million shekels, and is not fixed precisely because the number of blocked accounts is unknown. The filing puts it at several hundred Israeli users at minimum, possibly thousands.

The lead plaintiff's case shows the pattern. Its WhatsApp Business account was blocked three times in about eight months: in December 2025, in early July 2026, and permanently in late July 2026. Each time the notice was identically vague, saying that some activity in the account may violate the terms of use. Which activity, it did not say.

Why this reaches a one-person business

For a large share of Israeli self-employed, WhatsApp is not one app among many. Orders arrive there, prices get agreed there, reminders go out there, and post-sale service runs there. A block closes that channel at once, with no known reopening date and nobody to talk to. Some accounts caught in this wave came back within a few hours of an appeal, some were blocked again, and some stayed blocked for good.

What is known about the causes

Meta blocks accounts for sending messages in bulk, for using unofficial apps, and for activity its automated detection systems read as suspicious. All three touch a business directly: a mailout to a customer list, an automation tool wired into the account, and a fast burst of replies to an unusual volume of enquiries can all look that way to the system.

In the current wave, blocks were reported minutes after scanning the WhatsApp Web QR code. Journalists and media staff were among those hit. In August 2026 the company admitted that a technical fault in its systems had wrongly blocked many accounts, and said it was working to restore them. A Meta spokesperson said a mistake sometimes occurs in the process and that the company fixes it as fast as it can. Meta's Oversight Board criticised the transparency of the process, the appeal route and the support a user gets.

What the claim asks for

The remedies sought are restoration of blocked accounts, a declaration that the conduct is unlawful, an obligation to give advance notice that specifies the violation, a genuine appeal process including human review, disclosure of the data on account blocks in Israel over the past seven years, and compensation for those blocked.

This is a certification request, not a judgment. The court first has to decide whether the case may proceed as a class action, and only then are the claims heard on their merits. Until that happens, nothing changes in how the blocks are carried out.

What can be done without waiting for the court

Treat WhatsApp as a channel you rent rather than an asset you own. The customer list and the phone numbers belong somewhere under your control, not only inside the app. The same goes for the conversation history with any client you care about keeping.

Check what is connected to the account. Automation tools that hook in through WhatsApp Web, and unofficial clients, are precisely the behaviour named as grounds for a block, and when the account goes down because of them the explanation will not arrive.

Keep a second channel live and known to customers. A phone number, an email address and a form on the site. A client trying to reach you on the day the account is down should find another way without hunting for it.

And the part that touches the file itself: an order agreed in a chat and a price set in a voice note are not documents. The documents are the quote, the invoice and the receipt issued in the invoicing system, and those are what get retained under the record-keeping rules and handed to the accountant. A business whose entire paper trail sits in a WhatsApp thread loses, along with the account, the material it is supposed to produce in an audit. Document retention sets out what has to be kept and for how long.
