Separating VAT out of an amount that already includes it
An invoice for 1,180 shekels breaks down into 1,000 before VAT plus 180 VAT. Getting there means dividing by 1.18, not subtracting 18 percent. Taking 18 percent off 1,180 returns 967.6, a number that appears in no report and reconciles with nothing.
The other direction is simpler: 1,000 times 1.18 is 1,180. Most VAT errors on invoices start with a VAT-inclusive amount typed into a field that expects the amount before it.
When there is no VAT at all
An osek patur charges no VAT to customers and deducts no input VAT on expenses, so this calculator says nothing useful about their pricing. It is still the right tool for checking an invoice they receive from a supplier.
A service supplied to a customer abroad can be a zero-rated transaction, which is not the same as exempt: the transaction is still reported, the VAT on it is zero, and the right to deduct input VAT survives. The conditions are in the zero-rated VAT guide.
Why the rate field is editable
VAT in Israel stood at 17 percent through the end of 2024 and has stood at 18 percent since January 2025. Checking an old invoice, an agreement signed before the change, or a document from another tax jurisdiction needs a different rate, so the field stays open. The default is always the rate in force for 2026.
